Scripts for the films
The written scripts for the two films on the Gutter Fighting DVD, The Fighting Knife and Unarmed, provided the text used for the English subtitles for both films.
The assumption was made that the film footage and the written scripts are all highly representative of what Fairbairn was attempting to communicate about his approach to these aspects of close combat.
Arguably these two films, combined with their written scripts, give contemporary researchers the clearest insights ever into Fairbairn's use of the knife in combat and his strategies and repertoire for fighting unarmed.
In several places each film varied from its respective script. As a result both the choice of text for, and the placement of, the English subtitles are quite rightly open to debate.
The written scripts for both films are now available on this site.
The purposes for making these scripts available include promoting transparency around the choice and positioning of the subtitles on the Gutter Fighting DVD, and encouraging further research and informed discussion that focuses on improving our understanding of Fairbairn's close combat legacy.
